Stop-motion Art Kit Animations - Experiential Learning

Learning to plan a stop motion animation  can take some practice.
Students get hands-on experience animating with pre-made artwork and colorful shapes. Learning to make a ball bounce, a plant grow, or the sun rise and shine as they practice creating smooth motions. Once they understand the math behind the animation and the importance of planning the movement, they can bring to life a visual story limited only by their imagination.

This workshop is much more about learning, playing, and process rather than the success of the end result. Here are some examples of playful skill-building animations.

Soar Summer Bridge Program - Stop-motion Art Residency

What does it mean to Soar? / Art Residency - Soar Program, Table of Hope
In a 4-week summer workshop series, middle school students collaborated on a project to create an animated short on the topic of “What it means to Soar”.

They explored what skills and support is needed to succeed.  Students worked with the artist and teachers to outline the topic and brainstorm to expand their ideas into a written story.  They illustrated those ideas and created animations using their unique artwork paired with colorful paper shapes.  They celebrated their success and shared their movie on the last day of the month-long program.  They hope their movie will inspire future participants of the Soar program.

PG Chambers in a school serving children with a variety of disabilities and developmental challenges. In this 3-month program, students K-8th created 3 different themed movies. Under the direction of the artist, the student, staff, and teachers worked together to define the story topic.  They created artwork and recorded voice narration to pair with the animations they created one picture at a time.   In these movies, the students shared about their emotions and feelings, growing a school garden, and shared how they worked together cooking food to share with their community.

Community Art-making Project - Stop-motion Animation Pop-up event

Visitors to the annual ARTsee Happening
were invited to help animate scenes based on a story written by an elementary student to share how important bees are to the world.

The artist worked with the participants, and they added to the animation one frame at a time to bring a story to life.

Here are some sample clips from the day >
